These mentoring programs are featured parts of DYSA. At-risk elementary, middle, and high school students and their mentors participate in a structured support and engagement program. Mentors are paired with a youth for 12 months. During that time, the two will participate in weekly planned activities to strengthen the relationship between the two and improve the young person's confidence and hopefulness. Mentors receive continuous training throughout the year and participates in monthly meetings to report their mentee’s progress.
The success of each youth is determined by their growth in the areas of Richard Lerner’s 5 C’s:
COMPETENCE: intellectual ability, social/behavioral skills
CONNECTION: positive bonds with people and institutions
CHARACTER: integrity, moral centeredness
CONFIDENCE: positive self-regard, self-efficacy, courage
CARING/COMPASSION: humane values, empathy, sense of social justice
